MSK Ultrasound

High-Resolution Imaging for Accurate Diagnosis and Personalized Care

MSK Ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive diagnostic tool that uses advanced ultrasound technology to visualize muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, and other soft tissue structures in real time—without exposure to radiation. At DouleurMD, this dynamic and precise imaging technique is used to assess joint pain, movement limitations, and soft tissue injuries when traditional X-rays may not provide enough detail.

Unlike static imaging tests, MSK ultrasound allows the physician to observe structures in motion, helping to identify subtle abnormalities and pinpoint the exact source of pain. It is ideal for diagnosing conditions like tendonitis, ligament sprains, bursitis, muscle tears, and nerve entrapments.

MSK ultrasound can also be combined with guided injections for targeted treatment. With real-time visualization, the physician can precisely direct medication to the affected area, enhancing both safety and treatment outcomes.

Since January 2020, DouleurMD is proud to offer diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound services performed by professionals certified in musculoskeletal sonography (RMSK).

FAQ

What is MSK Ultrasound?

MSK (musculoskeletal) ultrasound is a diagnostic imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, and nerves.

What conditions can it help diagnose?

It’s commonly used for diagnosing tendonitis, bursitis, ligament injuries, muscle tears, nerve compressions, and other causes of joint or soft tissue pain.

Is MSK Ultrasound safe?

Yes. It’s completely safe and radiation-free, making it suitable for all ages. It uses sound waves, not X-rays.

What are the benefits of MSK Ultrasound over other imaging methods?

MSK ultrasound is dynamic (shows movement), real-time, and highly detailed for soft tissue. It’s also more comfortable, less expensive, and faster than MRI in many cases.

Can treatment be done during the exam?

Yes. In some cases, ultrasound-guided injections can be performed immediately after the scan, using the same imaging to guide the needle directly to the problem area.

Is MSK Ultrasound covered by RAMQ?

No, diagnostic musculoskeletal (MSK) ultrasound is not covered by RAMQ when performed in a private clinic. This service is provided on a fee-for-service basis and is not reimbursed by the provincial health insurance plan. However, some private insurance plans may offer partial or full coverage—please check with your provider for specific details.

Do I need a referral?

A referral may be required depending on your condition. Contact us to find out if you can book directly or if a doctor’s recommendation is needed.
