Fluoroscopy-Guided Injection

Precision-Guided Pain Relief with Real-Time Imaging

Fluoroscopy-guided injections use real-time imaging to deliver medication with pinpoint accuracy to the source of your pain. This technique enhances both safety and effectiveness, especially for complex spinal and joint conditions.

At DouleurMD, we use fluoroscopic guidance for a wide range of injections, including:

  • Epidural steroid injections – for nerve root irritation or spinal stenosis
  • Facet joint injections (facet blocks) – for facet arthropathy or mechanical back pain
  • Sacroiliac joint injections – for SI joint dysfunction or inflammation
  • Peripheral joint injections – for shoulder, hip, wrist, ankle, or foot pain

These procedures, including cortisone and PRP injections, are performed by our expert physiatrists to reduce inflammation, relieve pain, and support your return to daily function.

FAQ

What is fluoroscopy and how is it used in injections?

Fluoroscopy is a real-time X-ray imaging technique that lets doctors see inside your body during a procedure. It helps guide the needle to the exact location of inflammation or nerve irritation, improving the accuracy and effectiveness of the injection.

What conditions can be treated with fluoroscopy-guided injections?

This procedure is commonly used to treat:

  • Back Pain
  • Neck Pain
  • Chronic Pain
  • Cervical Spine Instability

Is the procedure painful?

Most patients feel only mild discomfort. A local anesthetic is used to numb the area, and the procedure itself usually lasts less than 30 minutes.

Are there any risks involved?

Fluoroscopy-guided injections are very safe when performed by trained specialists. As with any injection, there is a small risk of bleeding, infection, neurological injury or allergic reaction, but these complications are rare.

What should I do before and after a fluoroscopy-guided injection?

Before the injection:

  • Continue eating and drinking normally—no fasting required.
  • Wear comfortable clothing; avoid jewelry near the injection site.
  • Take your usual medications unless told otherwise by your doctor.
  • Bring a list of your medications and any relevant imaging reports.
  • Arrange for someone to drive you home, especially if an epidural is being performed.

After the injection:

  • Rest for the remainder of the day; avoid heavy lifting or intense activity.
  • Mild soreness at the injection site is normal—use ice packs as needed.
  • Keep the bandage on for 24 hours; you can shower the next day.
  • Monitor for increased pain, fever, or unusual symptoms and contact the clinic if they occur.
  • Resume normal activities the next day unless otherwise advised.
  • Avoid physiotherapy, sports, and strenuous activities for the following 48 hours.

How soon will I feel relief?

Some patients experience immediate pain relief due to the local anesthetic, while the anti-inflammatory effects of the medication can take a few days to set in.

Is this injection covered by the RAMQ?

Yes — fluoroscopy-guided injections are covered by the RAMQ when medically necessary, except when PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) is injected, as PRP is considered a private treatment. In cases where PRP is used, the procedure must be paid out of pocket.

If you’re unsure whether your injection involves PRP, our team will confirm this with you during your consultation.

Are there any side effects?

Yes, some patients may experience mild side effects such as temporary pain, swelling, or bruising at the injection site. These effects typically subside within a few days.

Patients with diabetes or high blood pressure may experience fluctuations in blood sugar or blood pressure levels for up to 2 weeks following the injection. We recommend monitoring your levels during this time and contacting your physician if you notice anything unusual.

How long does the effect last?

Relief can last from a few weeks to several months depending on the condition being treated, your overall health, and how your body responds to the injection.

Will I need more than one injection?

In some cases, a series of injections may be recommended for long-term relief, especially for chronic or recurring pain.
